History
The State Committee of Water Economy (Water Committee) was founded on February 9, 2001.
Background
As of 1990, the Ministry of Melioration and Water Economy operated in Soviet Armenia, whose main functions included the operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation, drainage, and water supply systems, flowing and deep wells, and reservoirs. This ministry was also responsible for the construction, reconstruction, and design of new facilities, the study and research of water-related issues, and the desalinization of saline soils.
Later, with the aim of achieving the financial recovery of companies in the water economy sector, improving the quality of services provided by them to consumers, refining tariff policies, and implementing economic reforms in the sector, the Government of the Republic of Armenia, by its decision No. 92 dated February 9, 2001, approved the concept of reforms in water resources and water economy management of the Republic of Armenia. It also established the State Committee of Water Economy attached to the Government of the RA, which was later renamed the Water Committee.
According to the Water Code of the RA, the Water Committee is the authorized body for water systems management, which currently operates under the Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure of the RA.
Today, for the purpose of agricultural development, the Water Committee ensures the storage and supply of irrigation water and the operation of drainage networks, and coordinates the provision of drinking water supply and sewerage services. To this end, the Government—through and coordinated by the Water Committee—channels significant annual capital investments into the construction, maintenance, and operation of reservoirs, main and secondary canals, pumping stations, daily regulation reservoirs, chlorination stations, and water supply and sewerage systems, for the well-being of our country and people.
