On February 9, 2001, the State Committee of Water Economy (Water Committee) was founded.

Background As of 1990, the Ministry of Land Reclamation and Water Management was operating in Soviet Armenia. Its primary functions included the operation, maintenance, and repair of irrigation, drainage, and watering systems, artesian and deep wells, and reservoirs. The Ministry was also responsible for the construction, reconstruction, and design of new facilities, researching water-related issues, and the desalination of saline soils.

Subsequently, to financially recover water sector companies, improve the quality of services provided to consumers, enhance tariff policy, and implement economic reforms in the sector, the Government of the Republic of Armenia approved the concept for the management reforms of Armenia's water resources and water economy via Decision No. 92 on February 9, 2001. Additionally, the State Committee of Water Economy adjacent to the RA Government was established, which was later renamed the Water Committee.

According to the RA Water Code, the Water Committee is the authorized body for water systems management, currently operating within the RA Ministry of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure.

Today, aimed at agricultural development, the Water Committee ensures the storage and supply of irrigation water, the operation of drainage networks, and coordinates the provision of drinking water supply and wastewater disposal services. To this end, through and under the coordination of the Water Committee, the Government directs significant annual capital investments toward the construction, maintenance, and operation of reservoirs, primary and secondary canals, pumping stations, daily regulation reservoirs, chlorination stations, and water supply and drainage systems—for the well-being of our country and people.
